Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this experimental study was to determine the expression of serotonin and to evaluate the changes of expression of serotonin in spinal cord ischemia/ reperfusion injured rats.

Materials and Methods: Spraque-Dawley rats (250-300 gm) were classified into two groups according to experimental methods. Control group(n=5) underwent sham operation. Experimental group(n=5) underwent clamping of the abdominal aorta just below the left renal artery and the abdominal aorta just above the aortic bifurcation for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes reperfusion. The spinal cord was obtained 7 days after operation. The expression of serotonin was examined using fluoroscent microscope and image analyzer.

Results: Experimental group was more strong expression of serotonin than the control group (p<0.05). The expression of serotonin was found mostly in the cytoplasm of neurons in posterior horn of the spinal cord in the experimental group.

Conclusions: These results suggest that increasing expression of serotonin may have a role in spinal shock after ischemic injury in spinal cord of rats.
